Profound advice delivered at Masjid us Sunnah (Cranford) on 22nd January, 2016 by our noble brother, Abū Idrīs Muḥammad. Our brother emphasised on the importance of seeking knowledge from authentic sources (i.e. Salaf and the people of knowledge). He also spoke concerning the virtue of closely following the companions of the Messenger of Allāh and the righteous people who came after.
ʿAbdullāh b. Masʾūd reported: The Prophet said, “The best people are those of my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then, there will come people after them whose testimony precedes their oaths and their oaths precede their testimony.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī & Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]
The salaf were staunch regarding the one who sought knowledge from anyone who claimed to possess knowledge. Thus, we have been taught that learning our Religion from unqualified and unknown individuals is truly a dangerous affair.
Undoubtedly, anything which distances one from the path of Allāh results in misguidance and misguidance is in the Hellfire; it is a tremendous affair and for this reason one must take heed. We should reflect upon the statement by Muḥammad Ibn Sirīn:
“This knowledge is Religion, so look to whom you take your Religion from”
A profound statement that the people of knowledge constantly remind us of.
